Blogmas #9 – Winter Wellness Tips

This year we have heard about many different ways we can physically protect ourselves – hand washing, social distancing and face masks. One thing I’ve been big on and always have been big on, is protecting myself from the inside. Giving my body the nutrients it needs to keep my immune system boosted. This is especially important as we approach the colder months.

So in this post I’ll be sharing ways you can keep yourself healthy from the inside. I’ll even be including a video of me making my favourite breakfast, filled with all the nutrients to kick start your body for the day!

Stay Hydrated

I know, I know.. it’s cliché! But it’s cliché for a good reason – your body is made up of water, so it makes sense why your body suffers if you don’t stay hydrated. Water is beneficial in so many ways. It’s good for your skin, your hair, your organs and your overall health. I don’t need to tell you this though.. we’ve all heard it before.

Try to drink at least 2 litres a day. You could get yourself a huge 2 litre drinking bottle to motivate yourself. Fill it up at the start of the day and make it your goal to finish it. If you drink a lot of coffee – set a rule for yourself, where you have to drink a glass of water for every coffee you have. There are so many ways you can motivate yourself to drink more water.

Start The Day With A Healthy Breakfast

Another cliché right? You’ve heard the phrase ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ at least once in your life before! You can’t escape that phrase.

It’s not a lie – breakfast IS the most important meal of the day but I’m going to rephrase this. A nutritious breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A breakfast which will give you all the nutrients you need and kickstart your day. You want a breakfast that is going to fill you up and give you the energy you need to get through the morning – a cereal full of refined sugars may not do the trick for this! Although.. it’s better than nothing.

I have two favourite breakfast ideas – Oatmeal and avocado and eggs on a wrap. These are my two go-to breakfast ideas.

At the moment I’m loving oatmeal. You can add so much to oatmeal – you can add different textures flavours, and experiment with different ingredients. I’ll be sharing a video of how I have been enjoying my oatmeal recently. This breakfast fills me up and is full of great ingredients which your body will thank you for!

Get 7 / 8 Hours Of Sleep

This is something I struggle with! I am working on it though. I do not do early mornings, I’m a night owl so I like to stay up late and get up late but I can’t do this because I have to be up at 7am for work! So I’m having late nights and early mornings and struggling to wake up as I’m not getting enough sleep. As a result of this I’m lagging throughout the day, so I have to nap. Because I take a nap during the day, I can’t sleep when I go to bed at night. See the vicious cycle?

It won’t always be perfect – you will have restless nights, nights where you’re woken up by your bladder or your partner fidgeting too much. What’s important is to get yourself into a good routine to encourage a healthy sleep pattern.

Set yourself up a night time routine. Go get yourself some nice lavender smelling bubble bath, put together a calming music playlist or light your favourite candles. Write down and plan your nighttime routine. You could start your routine at 9pm. You could start by doing something as simple as not allowing yourself to go on your phone for the rest of the evening, because TV’s and phones can interfere with our sleep believe it or not. You could take a bath whilst listening to calming music, then get into bed and catch up with some reading or deep breathing.

Eat More Vegetables

Do I really need to explain this?? I try to have vegetables with every single meal. Luckily I’m a huge fan of vegetables, so I find this really easy. Even sprouts! I love how juicy and crunchy vegetables are.

I know this is more difficult if you’re really not a big fan of the taste of vegetables. My advice for this would be to pour gravy over them. I always tell people who don’t enjoy vegetables to do this – it masks the taste and takes away some of the flavour as gravy is quite a rich flavour.

Wrap Up Warm

The weather is getting colder (in a lot of places!) So keep yourself warm. Put a hat, scarf and gloves on. Pour yourself a hot water bottle and sip on a nice hot drink. Make sure you’ve got your thickest coat on when you have to face the bitter cold of December.

Drink Green Tea Or Hot Water With Lemon and Honey

This one is a personal favourite of mine. I love drinking green tea with lemon and a drop of honey. It’s so delicious. I drink a lot of tea – normal tea isn’t bad for you and actually has health benefits too but the two sugars I always used to add, does start to add up. So I switched my PG tips up for green tea as I wanted to drink something with a few more health benefits and green tea has so many health benefits!

I don’t enjoy the taste of plain green tea – it tastes like drinking swamp water! But add a few lemon slices and a drop of honey and it makes it delicious! Green tea can come in all kinds of flavours.

If you really cannot stand green tea, hot water with lemon and honey is also a good option. Lemon and honey has so many health benefits too – it will improve digestion, boost your immune system and flush out toxins. It’s perfect if you have a sore throat too.

Don’t Rely On Vitamins

I think it’s a great idea to take a multi-vitamin once a day to cover any vitamins you’re lacking, but I think it’s so important to try and get all your vitamins in the form of food. Your body will thank you a lot more for this and you’ll feel full and satisfied.

I know people who have pill boxes full of 4/5 different vitamin tablets for each day. I always think, if you eat a balanced and nutritious diet and focus on what you’re putting in your body you wouldn’t need all of those vitamins. (Unless of course you’re allergic to certain foods or cannot eat certain foods)

Too much of certain vitamins can also be bad for you – like vitamin A for example. This can affect your bones and too much Vitamin D can cause a build up of calcium in your body. So take these tablets with caution and remember to just eat a balanced and varied diet.

Exercise

My last wellness tip is one you’re all going to groan at. I know, I hate exercising too!

You don’t need to do hours and hours of vigorous exercise. You could do something as simple as going for a walk for 20 minutes. Do some yoga. Go on a bike road around the block. Even if you think a walk around the block isn’t worth it and won’t help – do it. Any exercise is better than none. Get that blood pumping around your organs!
