My Curly Hair Routine – Products I Am Currently Loving

In this post I’ll be sharing my updated natural curly hair routine and the products I am currently loving. I love looking after my hair, buying new products to try and looking up other hair routines for any tips, tricks or product recommendations. Even if you have straight hair, I would still highly recommend the products I’ll be talking about – they are so hydrating and will add moisture and protein into your hair, which are the two of the most important things to put in your hair!

Pre Wash

Before washing my hair, I usually add some form of treatment and hair oil to my scalp.

On my scalp I like to add Jamaican Black Castor Oil. I love this product – it smells so good and a little goes a long way! I apply this to my temples, around my ears and underneath my hair – making my way across my hair line and I also add a small amount to my hands and treat myself to a scalp massage. Before I started doing this I noticed some thin gaps in my hair line, around my temples. After using Jamaican Black Castor Oil, I’ve seen a huge improvement and have so many baby hairs around my hairline now.

We can’t forget about those ends now, can we? For my ends I will either add my Vatika Egg Protein Mask which is the best hair mask I’ve ever used. It smells incredible! And no – it doesn’t smell like egg! It smells so fresh and my curls instantly bounce up into tight ringlets when I apply this treatment. I use this when I style my hair straight too and it always makes my hair silky smooth. If I’m not using my Egg Protein Mask, I’ll use the Shea Moisture Strength and Restore Treatment mask – this mask has all the ingredients your hair will love; Jamaican black castor oil, Shea butter, apple cider vinegar and peppermint.

If I don’t fancy using either of those hair masks, I will just rub Argan oil through my ends. (You can use any oil, your hair will love it! I would also recommend coconut oil)

I mix up my routine quite a lot – so one week I will use my egg protein mask and then the next week I’ll use my Shea Moisture mask. This is so my hair doesn’t get used to one product too much. It’s also extremely important to balance the moisture and protein in your hair, so I don’t like to overload one product too much.

I usually apply my treatments, plait my hair and leave it on for the night, ready to wash off the following morning or I will leave it on for an hour or two.

Washing My Hair

In the shower, I use my holy grail shampoo and a conditioner I’ve recently started trying. Both of these products are by Shea Moisture – can you tell how much I love the Shea Moisture line?

The shampoo I use is the Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Shampoo. There are so many brilliant reviews about this product and I’ve been using it for many years. I love how long this product lasts. I’ve had the same bottle for months now and I’m not even half way through.

The conditioner is one I have recently purchased – it’s a part of the Manuka Honey and Yogurt line. So far I am impressed – this conditioner has a really gentle, sweet smell and it also works great as a leave in conditioner for me. Both of these products contain no sulfates.

With the amount of product I use – there can be quite a build up on your scalp. This is common with natural / curly hair. Sometimes sulfate free shampoo isn’t the best at washing this product out and can leave you with a build up on your scalp leading to hair loss and scalp issues, so once a month I do like to use a normal shampoo that does contain all the ‘bad ingredients’ just to make sure the product build up is completely gone. The shampoo I usually use for this is Lush Wasabi Shan Kui which leaves my scalp feeling really tingly and clean!

I always detangle my hair in the shower with my Denman brush, whilst the conditioner is still in my hair. I leave the conditioner in for 5 minutes whilst I wash, shave my legs and sing really loud because singing always sounds better in the shower.

When I come out of the shower I always use a microfiber towel to wrap my hair in – it would physically hurt me to use a normal towel now. They’re so bad for your hair!

Now here comes the fun part – styling!

I use three products to style my hair after I come out out of the shower. I use a leave in conditioner, a curl activating cream and finally a flax seed gel. The products I am currently loving are the Shea Moisture (Surprise surprise) leave in conditioner, Cantu Curl Activating Cream and Cantu Flax Seed Gel. I get amazing results when I use these three products. My hair isn’t weighed down or sticky – it dries soft and defined. I always brush through these products with my Denman brush to make sure the product is evenly distributed and to help define my curl pattern even more.

I normally leave my hair to air dry – I find that’s how I reduce my frizz. If I use a diffuser I get more volume and more frizz however I prefer defined curls over frizz, so nowadays I’m making the most of working from home and letting my hair air dry!
