My new project – Making my own clothing – DIY crop top
I’ve been M.I.A recently.. and that’s because I’ve been so busy. I’ve been working on a new project/hobby.
I had this idea come to me one evening – I’ve always loved altering my clothes. Cropping them, cutting the sleeves, changing the necklines, so I thought what if I make my own clothes?! At first I thought ‘no that’d be far too difficult and it’s just a spur of the moment thought so I will end up buying a sewing machine and never use it.’ Sewing machines don’t come cheap, especially if I didn’t end up actually using it!
The next day, I went to work and I randomly asked if anyone had an old sewing machine they wanted to sell for cheap, and low and behold.. one of the ladies at work said I could borrow hers! This was great as it gave me the opportunity to practice and get a feel for it before buying my own.
At first, I had a vision of starting my own clothing line and was thinking of this as a way I could start my own ‘thing’ however after starting this project I’ve come to realise how much I enjoy sewing and it’s quickly become a hobby of mine. I love being creative and making things.
So in this post I wanted to share my first creation with you!
I started practicing my sewing by buying old cheap clothes from secondhand shops and altering them slightly.
After getting a feel for the sewing machine and learning a few stitches I decided to head to the fabric shop. I picked up a few different fabrics – one of them being this skull print. Anything with skulls will no doubt catch my eye.
I thought this fabric would look great as a crop top so I began cutting and sewing.
In total this top took me around 4 hours to make which isn’t bad for a complete beginner, and it was such an easy design to work with.
I’m so happy with the result. So here is the finished product.
I made the two sleeves separately first and then the bodice. The bodice is elasticated at the back and then at the front I added a piece of material to tie around the middle.
I am eventually going to open my own little Depop or Etsy shop to sell handmade clothing however I do need to get to a good enough standard first..Although I did surprise myself with how good the quality of this top is! I wasn’t expecting it to come out so well, since it was the first piece of clothing I had made.
I love the design of this top – I think it looks so unique and would look great for a more alternative look, especially with the skull print.
What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments ^_^
I’ll be creating more content similar to this as I continue to work on designs.
I’ll see you on the next post,
