SEO For Beginners
SEO For Beginners
SEO can seem like an extremely daunting idea for new bloggers. I always avoided SEO in my first few years of blogging and only discovered it in more recently. Honestly – I’m still trying to figure it out and it can be difficult to get your head around but the good news is, once you’ve grasped the basics it will all start to make sense and fall into place!
What Is SEO?
What is SEO? At first I thought SEO was a feature you had to pay for or a program you had to download alongside your blog – there are features available to pay for / download however it’s not that complicated and honestly, SEO doesn’t cost a thing.
Let’s start with the basics – SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s a fancy way of saying “getting yourself to the first page of Google!” It’s basically just making yourself more visible and making your blog easier to find.
So how do we do this? We follow a set of simple rules, which will help to make your blog more visible. At first, these rules may seem complicated to follow but once you start applying them to all of your posts, it will become easier.
So what is this magical check list which will get you to the top of Google?!
Pick A Focus Keyphrase / Keyword
The first SEO tip is a pick a focus keyword or keyphrase. What is a keyphrase? It’s a phrase / word that relates to your post. For example, my keyphrase for this post is ‘SEO For Beginners’ This keyphrase is important as you’re going to refer back to it throughout your post.
You’re going to include your keyphrase in your post title, within the first few lines of your posts and in your subheadings. You’re going to use this throughout the your post and keep referring back to your keyphrase. You can even use this keyphrase in the titles of your blog photos – in fact, I would highly encourage this!
This is the phrase people will find your post / blog with, so you need to make sure you’re using this as much as possible. It can feel unnatural to do at first but you will get used to it.
There’s a lot more you can go into with keyphrase’s. You can research the most popular keyphrase’s and any upcoming keyphrase’s, so you can plan and create content around this.

A Short, Snappy Blog Title Which Includes Your Keyphrase
My next SEO tip is to keep your post title short and snappy – whilst also keeping your keyphrase in the title.
If you’re scrolling through Google, looking for a post about hair care tips, you’re going to be more inclined to click on ‘5 Best Hair Care Tips’ as opposed to ‘What To Do To Look After Your Hair.’
My blog title for this post is ‘SEO For Beginners’ which sounds better than ‘Tips To Improve SEO For Beginners.’ – it’s shorter, it’s snappier and it’s straight to the point.
Add Internal Links
This is a tip you can really use to your advantage – adding internal links encourages traffic to your other blog posts. What better way of promoting your blog? It’s free and you can control where your traffic is directed to.
Many bloggers add a ‘related posts’ subheading at the end of their posts. This is a great way to increase internal traffic as your readers are already interested in the post they’re reading, so they will be more inclined to view your related content.
Make Sure Your Posts Are Readable
My final tip is to make sure your content is readable. This means correct spelling, correct grammar and ensuring your sentences flow well. You’ve come this far with your SEO progress – you don’t want to let yourself down with your readability. Be mindful of the following –
- Structure your posts with subheadings
- Don’t make your sentences too long
- Don’t make your paragraphs too long
- Don’t start all of your sentences with the same word / line, mix it up!
Summary Of SEO For Beginners
Those are my SEO beginner tips – of course there is so much more to SEO and there is a lot more to learn but this is a great starting point if you’re a beginner.
